Prato Tasting Walking Tour: Street Food & History

Overview
Step off the beaten path and discover Prato, Tuscany’s best-kept secret, located just 20 minutes by train from Florence. Designed specifically for solo travelers and curious explorers, this shared outdoor walking tour is the perfect way to dive into rich medieval history, admire jaw-dropping open-air architecture, and connect with fellow travelers—all while enjoying the city’s most famous sweet tradition.
We will completely skip the crowded, expensive museum lines to experience the city like a local: dynamically, informally, and entirely from its vibrant streets and panoramic viewpoints.
📍 Meeting Point & How to Get There
  • Where we meet: In the center of Piazza del Duomo, right in front of the main entrance of the Cathedral of Santo Stefano (look for the guide holding a sign/wearing a badge).
  • By Train from Florence (Recommended): Take a regional train from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Prato Porta al Serraglio station (approx. 20-25 minutes). From the station, it is a very easy and flat 2-minute walk to Piazza del Duomo.
  • By Car: If you are driving, we recommend parking at Parcheggio Piazza San Francesco or Parcheggio Serraglio, both located just a short walk from the meeting point.
What We’ll Do & See
Our journey begins in the breathtaking Piazza del Duomo, where we will break the ice and get to know each other. You will marvel at the cathedral’s striking white-and-green marble facade and look up at the magnificent Pulpito di Donatello, a Renaissance masterpiece built right onto the exterior wall for everyone to see completely for free.
As we stroll through the lively medieval alleys, you will discover the fascinating stories of Prato’s wealthy merchants, the birth of modern banking, and the city’s historic rise as a textile superpower. We will stop in front of the majestic Palazzo Pretorio and the statue of the legendary Merchant, Francesco Datini.
The highlight of our walk will be a stop at a historic local pastry shop. Here, we will sit or stand at the counter for an authentic ritual: tasting the original Biscotti di Prato (Cantucci) paired with a traditional glass of sweet Vin Santo (or an Italian espresso). You will learn why these double-baked almond biscuits became a global icon and the proper Tuscan way to dip them!
We will wrap up our experience by walking inside the imposing Castello dell’Imperatore (Emperor’s Castle). We will climb up to the castle’s open-air ramparts—free of charge—to take a group photo with a stunning panoramic view over the rooftops of Prato. By the end of the tour, you’ll have new friends, great photos, and insider recommendations to continue your day!
